of $499." D-Link Launches Airspot Public/Private Internet Gateways D-Link today launched the first in its line of affordable
Airspot Public/Private Gateways named the D-Link Airspot DSA-3100. "It is a
complete hot spot gateway that provides a firewall, DHCP server and router
functions for both public and private broadband Internet access in a single
device simultaneously." McAfee Upgrades VirusScan McAfee Security Consumer on Monday introduced a new version
of McAfee VirusScan, with new capabilities designed to block worms from
spreading. "The new WormStopper technology automatically detects and alerts
users when their systems are attempting to send e-mail to an unusually large
number of addresses, and also alerts users when the system attempts to send
out too many single e-mails in a 30-second period." Microsoft 11g on the way Microsoft's Broadband Networking group looks like it's
gearing up for the roll out of its long-awaited line of 802.11g wireless
networking products. Although the official timing is "this Fall", the
company's PR folks are scheduling Press events next month. "The line-up
includes the MN-700 Wireless Station (router), MN-720 CardBus card (a clone of
Broadcom's reference design), MN-730 PCI adapter, and MN-820 Notebook kit,
which bundles an MN-700 and 720." Dell under attack over Inspiron notebook keyboard Users of Dell 8500 Inspiron machines have complained
bitterly about the quality of the keyboard and the firm now appears to be
shipping a new keyboard feel, for customers who ask. "Apparently the
problem is a lack of support for the keyboard on the Inspiron 8500, which Dell
is addressing by applying a fix for those who complain." Abit to offer Web BIOS service in September Taiwanese mobo makers Abit played with a Web BIOS update
for over two years but it's finally getting round to offering this service,
like some of its rivals. "Web based updates are much easier and many
companies made a BIOS update just a few clicks away. And Windows users are
able to does this without going down on DOS or any of its rather obscure
commands." D-Link Upgrades Xtreme G Firmware D-Link today released new firmware bringing the D-Link
AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless networking products in strict compliance with the
IEEE 802.11g standard. "The new firmware is integrated in shipping D-Link
AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Routers and as drivers for CardBus and PCI Adapters
and is now available to current users as a free firmware download at D-Link.com"
Man reckons he's shrunk Win95 to under 5MB In the race to see just how tiny you can make Windows, a
chap at Msbetas.net claims he's got the operating environment down to under
5MB. "Now a chap calling himself BOFH (no relation) at Msbetas.net says
he's created the first 5MB bootable, registry editable, command prompt and
user driven version of Windows 95." AMD to can Athlon 64s below 2GHz A report on a German web site claimed that AMD is now
producing such good yields on Athlon 64, Hammer technology, that it's
considering canning any clock speeds lower than 2GHz when it launches next
month. "The article says AMD will introduce an Athlon 64 FX-55 at 2.4GHz
(940) pins, an FX-53 2.2GHz (940) pins, a 3700+ (2.4GHz 754 pins) and a 3400+
(2.2GHz, 754), but the higher speeds probably won't appear until next year."
Intel 'Yamhill' coming in 2005 Intel's mysterious 'Yamhill' technology - the chip giant's
answer to AMD's AMD64 architecture - is a runner, but won't appear before
2005, a report from investment research organisation American Technology
Research (ATR) has claimed. "Rumours that Intel is working on Yamhill, a
set of 64-bit extensions to the 32-bit x86 instruction set, have abounded for
as long as AMD has been known to be working on similar technology, if not
longer." Microsoft's Web Site Brought Down By Attack Microsoft's Web site was made inaccessible for an hour and
40 minutes Friday afternoon when a denial-of-service attack overwhelmed the
site with traffic, making it impossible for legitimate page requests to get
through. "The outage, which began about 1:21 p.m. Pacific time, was the
result of a conventional denial-of-service attack and not a software
vulnerability being exploited, a Microsoft spokesman says." HP releases 32-processor systems Hewlett Packard Co. has announced it has begun shipping
AlphaServers: high-end, 32-processor HP AlphaServer GS1280 systems. "Based
on EV7 Alpha processor technology, the systems offer a suite of software
transition tools and new business practices - the Alpha RetainTrust program,
designed to offer capacity and growth through joint planning and active
support" Lexar Media Announces World's Highest Capacity CF Card Lexar Media today announced that the company is shipping
the world's first and only 4GB CompactFlash memory card. "Specifically
designed for professional photographers shooting hi-resolution images, the 4GB
card stores about 600 images captured in RAW mode using a 6-megapixel
professional camera. Amateur photographers shooting with lower resolution
cameras could expect to capture as many as 45,000 JPEG images using the high
capacity memory card. The actual number of images a 4GB card can store depends
on the camera quality, resolution and image file selection mode." Extra Athlon64 pin mystery solved The mystery of why a version of AMD's upcoming 64-bit
processor will come in 940 and 939 versions, first revealed in the INQUIRER,
appears to have been partly cracked. "AMD said that the extra pin is needed
to work on six layer Opteron motherboards. As we said earlier, the chips will
first start shipping in 940 Opteron configurations, and they will start to
appear after the official launch date in September." Vodafone to Sell U.S.-Roaming Laptop Data Card Vodafone Group Plc, the world's largest cellphone company
by revenue, said on Friday it had jointly developed a product giving laptops
mobile Internet access in the United States as well as its other territories.
"Vodafone, with networks in 28 countries, developed the new data card with
its U.S. joint venture, Verizon Wireless." Gateway PCs head back to the low end Having admitted defeat in its strategy of pursuing higher
margins with feature-packed PCs, Gateway is planning to compete against the
top PC makers in the U.S. on price with the new Gateway 310 series PCs, which
were announced Thursday. "The three PCs in the new 310 series are designed
to stack up against low-cost products from market leaders Dell and
Hewlett-Packard, a spokeswoman said." Big anomalies found in 3DMark03 There's an interesting report on Ace's Hardware today
called 3DMark03 Performance Factors. "Brian Neal reports that while
testing, Ace's came across benchmark results that showed a 350MHz Pentium II
with PC100 memory and a Radeon 9700 Pro knocked the socks off a 2.8GHz Pentium
4 with dual channel PC2100 memory and a Radeon 9600 in three out of the four
3DMark03 benchmarks." Dell misses PDA patch posting deadline - again Dell failed to make its Axim x5 PDA firmware fix widely
available for the second time yesterday after an eleventh hour glitch forced
the PC maker to pull the patch from its servers. "To be fair to Dell, it
did post the patch as it had promised to do on Monday. Then, having previously
said the fix would be made available on Saturday, 26 July, and failed to do
so, it pledged to offer the update by Wednesday." |
